Pilling Band are proud to announce the appointment of our new musical director, John Roberts.
John was born in Manchester and took up the cornet at the age of 7 with his local band Streetfold, which later became Moston and Beswick. He was a member with Streetfold until leaving school when he joined the Royal Air Force College band at RAF Cranwell as a full time musician. On leaving the RAF John moved away from Manchester to join the Civil Service and took a break from brass banding. After his 6 year break he joined then Championship Section Band Skelmersdale on cornet.
John took up the baton with Freckleton in the mid 70’s and later had spells with Longridge, Lancashire Post Band, Poulton and Blackpool before taking another break in the early 90’s. After his break he held the position of Musical Director with the Goodshaw, Skelmersdale, Chorley, Standish and Nelson Bands. John’s highlights as a conductor are winning many contests gaining promotions and taking a band to the National Finals.
John was appointed Musical Director at Pilling in May 2012. On his appointment he said “I would like to thank the band for putting faith in me and I look forward to helping rebuild the band”.
